Untold
This is a book that I have made that re-tells 5 well known Fairy Tales, but also at their dark pasts; the evolution of each tale, including details of all the dark and gruesome originals.
This project challenges the conventions of a traditional book; with two different related sets of texts combined into the one book. The standard book contains the Five Tales, but hidden throughout the book using unique experimental binding techniques is an accompanying set of information detailing the history and evolution of each tale. Each tale features its own individual method of concealing the information, with 5 methods in total.
It is all completely hand-made, with the covers being hand-crafted, bound in cloth and then letterpressed and embossed (The title with white ink, the sub-title only embossed) and the rest of the book being hand-bound (a necessity with the experimental nature of the binding).
The project is hard to convey with just photos, so I also made a video of the book being looked through cover to cover (don’t worry, parts are sped up!) showing the mechanics of each concealment. The video can be found here – https://vimeo.com/42210121
