Legends

Less and More

Any Londonites with a taste for the work of Dieter Rams may well be interested to learn that an exclusive guided tour of the exhibition is being given by Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic on the 26th February.

Places are limited to just 30 lucky Rams fans at a cost of £45 per ticket which includes the tour, museum entry and the proper, proper nice 800 page catalogue which normally retails at – yes you guessed it – £45. Half of the tickets have already gone so be quick!

Paul Rand Inc

Spotted this over at Amass – the blog of designer James Phillips Williams – JP to his friends. Lovely to see the simplicity and beauty of the card. I wonder how it would look if Mr Rand was to design it today with all the added content that goes on a card these days – email address, URL, Skype, Fax etc. I reckon it would still be a belter!

Chermayeff & Geismar

I chanced across the site of Chermayeff & Geismar pretty much by accident and must admit I was pretty ignorant, if not of their work but to fact that they did it.

Take a look through the ‘identities’ section and discover a virtual who’s who of great American branding.

Wim Crouwel

Happy Birthday tomorrow – 21st November – Mr Wim Crouwel!

One of the true, true legends of graphic design he is an innovator, a genius, my design hero and the, very obvious, inspiration behind the Bitique logo face – which is called Whim.

May I show you my portfolio

Great little article over on Design Observer by Michael Beirut on the subject of showing his portfolio in 1979 whilst job hunting in New York. An excellent read as always from my favorite design writer.

Charles & Ray Eames

Today marks the anniversary, albeit 10 years apart, of two of the most important figures in modern design – Charles and Ray Eames. By harnessing modern manufacturing techniques and materials with their own unique aesthetic they changed the face of post war furniture design producing pieces for Herman Miller and Vitra amongst many others.

Charles Gwathmey

Unfortunately, Charles Gwathmey passed away on August 3rd 2009. Probably his most famous work is the renovation of the Guggenheim Museum in 1992. He is also one of ‘The New York Five’ from 1969; a group of five architects whose work appeared in a  MoMA exhibition organized by Arthur Drexler in 1967. His work is truly amazing and fans of architecture or simply brilliant design are mourning his loss.
